What is Passion Works Studio?

Passion Works Studio is a highly creative art studio that is housed within a vocational workshop for adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. The studio supports collaborations between artists with and without disabilities. The spirit of partnership and shared vision of Passion Works Studio represents the very best in collaborative community arts.

What is the purpose/mission and vision of Passion Works?

Purpose: To inspire and liberate the human spirit through the arts. Mission: Passion Works Studio will be a premiere art studio that supports collaborations between artists with and without developmental disabilities .Vision: To create and live out a best practice model for collaborative art making between artists with and without development disabilities. This new mindset demonstrates that creativity is innately a part of all people and recognized that art enhances the quality of life and strengthens communities.

What is the structure of the studio?

The creative process at Passion Works places Passion Works Artists together with Resident and Visiting professional artists to create outstanding and beautiful works of art.

What is the role of the volunteer?

Volunteers are invited into the studio and are viewed as valued partners in helping to achieve the purpose/mission and vision of Passion Works Studio. We encourage and support volunteers by providing fulfilling experiences that are of mutual benefit to our Passion Works Artists, the studio and volunteers.

What types of volunteer opportunities exist with Passion Works Studio?

Volunteers assist with a variety of tasks. These can range from one-on-one assistance to a Passion Works Artist (such as sitting with a Passion Works Artist and obtaining supplies when needed), helping with production (such as cutting stamens for Passion Flowers), or turning an image from a sketchbook into a larger-than-life paper mache animal! Let us know what skills you have (sewing, listening, painting, putting things together and organizing). We’ll work with you to create an experience that utilizes your talents.

What times are available to volunteers?

Volunteers are welcome in the studio Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Our Passion Works Artists are in the studio Monday, Tuesday and Friday until 2:15 p.m. If you would like to experience the energy of “art-making at it’s finest” you’ll want to come at these times. Wednesdays and Thursdays are more production oriented. You may be preparing materials for future use or adding a finishing touch to an art piece .Occasionally, volunteers are also needed at special events during the evening or weekends. We ask that you volunteer in 2-hour time increments for a minimum of 20 total hours per quarter.

Is there a way for me to volunteer even if I do not live in the Athens area?

Yes! Individual projects can be customized to utilize your talents. An example would be someone who volunteers to write a grant for the studio, coordinates a fundraiser, makes a personal contact to facilitate a corporate partnership or gives us a name of a great gallery to show our work. The possibilities are endless and no idea is too big or too little!

Does Passion Works Studio have volunteer opportunities for groups?

Yes. We ask that each group have at least 5 members in order to organize an independent activity. Volunteer groups have cleaned metal for Passion Flowers, hosted grilled cheese fundraisers and even walked in the OU Homecoming Parade! Let’s talk about how your group can get involved.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.

How do I get started as a volunteer?

Those interested in volunteering must read the Volunteer Information Packet (located online), complete a volunteer application and attend an orientation before beginning.  Contact the Volunteer Coordinator by e-mail volunteer@passionworks.org to set up an orientation and to finalize the details of your volunteer opportunity.
