“Though we didn’t understand each others’ language, painting and art was language enough to become friends,” said Tsultrim Sherab, a monk describing his two day residency at Passion Works in 2005. The eight monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery traveled across an ocean, landing in a different place, culture and even time as part of the North American Sacred Art Tour. This event was a sharing of similarities and differences between the two groups, where both the monks and artists grew culturally and creatively through art. While these two groups could not appear more different, they found that artistic motivation was the common ground that fostered their many similarities. Although traits such as language and spirituality seemed worlds apart, a respect for each person’s perspective and ability cultivated a closeness between the two peoples. And the results were incredible.
