Featured Fan: Ed Fisher

Ed Fisher has been there for Passion Works from the beginning. One tantalizing trip to his fabulous restaurant, Purple Chop Stix, will point that out to even the casual observer! Once you set foot in the door, whimsical paper mache sculpture pieces set the scene. Diners new to the area ask about the art that surrounds them. Ed and staff are quick to point them our way. Ed has helped us with many receptions and celebrations. His artful and delicious food is well known throughout the area and well beyond. We’d just like to thank Ed for his ongoing commitment and support! Purple Chop Stix is located at 371 1/2 Richland Ave. in Athens. You can contact them to inquire about restaurant hours or catering at 740-592-4798.

Introducing Dara Day & Co.

Dara Walburn is one of our most active and well loved, ambassadors for Passion Works Studio art and products! She has been an artist at Passion Works since 2009 and has recently started her own business called Dara Day & Co. When asked about her new endeavor, Dara shares, “In order to promote the vision of Passion Works and to support other artists with disabilities, I decided to start my own business as Sales Representative for the studio and its artists.” And she’s off to a successful start!

Dara leads home and office parties with the purpose of promoting her fellow artists and selling their artistic creations. During a party, Dara does a short presentation, shows a video which gives a glimpse into the studio and offers a display of products that are available for purchase. Dara also shares her personal thoughts of having a disability and how the experience of being an artist at Passion Works has impacted her life.

If you are interested in hosting a fun, educational party in your home or office in Athens County, Ohio, you can reach Dara at daraday.co@gmail.com.

Bird Houses and Feeders for Spring

Made of sturdy wood construction, and decorated by our artists, you’ll be rockin’ the birdie population in your neighborhood with Bird Houses and Feeders from Passion Works. Over the years, fans from far and near have brightened their tree branches and porches with these wonderful pieces of functional art! The birds agree! You can’t go wrong with these beauties and at a reduced price of $40, you can decorate that wrap-around porch and have winged visitors year round!

Looking Back and Going Forward

As this year comes to an end we would like to thank the Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities (ACBDD), our parent company ATCO, Inc., and you for your support.

2011 was a year of loss, change and exciting new things.

On February 20th we lost our friend and artist Jonathan Salzman who’s joyful laugh delighted the studio and who’s whimsical animal art delighted art collectors. Jonathan is truly missed by all and wecelebrate his life!

On March 31st Joyce Frank retired as Studio Coordinator but stayed on as Passion Works National Sales Representative.

Wayne Savage was hired as the new Studio Coordinator, he was Cofounder of the Rendville Art Works in Perry County.

We had a family reunion, of sorts, with our “One Big Family” exhibit which featured collaborative artwork created by past and current Passion Works artists featuring a collaboration with Mark Hackworth and his Hocking College Printmaking class. We were pleased to welcome back both Wendy Minor-Vinny and Patty Mitchell for this artistic reunion.

We were honored to have Director John Martin of the Ohio Department of DD visit Passion Works! We were honored to have Patty Mitchell bring a group of ladies from Argentina into the studio and we were pleased when the nice folks of Rendville Art Works came to visit us bearing gifts and showing off what they claimed to be the world largest shoestring ball.

Our own Fred Cremeans was the featured artist in an exhibition in the Old Gallery in Allenspark, Colorado where he attended and did a two hour demonstration of his art and sold many pieces. Fred represented himself and Passion Works well!

We held our 1st Annual Cake Fight & Auction. It was a huge and fun success. Our 2nd Annual Cake Fight & Auction will be held in the spring of 2012 and every spring thereafter. We had 50 businesses and organizations donate cakes and many others donate services. Wonderful community support.

We won 2nd place in this years Ohio University Homecoming Parade for our float and 1st place for having the best window display, (three years in a row!). This years theme was beyond the bricks so we went with “Follow the bricks beyond the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City” as we recreated Oz.

Visiting Artist Migiwa Orimo came to us in a two week Visiting Artist Residency from Yellow Springs and worked with Passion Works artists doing a spectacular installation “This is Where”, assisted by Passion Works artist Kai Wilhere who did her own display “This is Wear.” Ohio Arts Council granted this project!

So Many Exciting New Products that Make Santa’s Job so Easy!

Make a list and check it twice! You’ll want to include many of our New Items from 2011! All are available in the Passion Works Store or online.
Of course, there’s always new one-of-a-kind fine art paintings and sculpture available at the Passion Works Store. You’ll want to set aside some time to come in, browse, admire and pick out that unique gift for your “someone special.”

Welcome, Migiwa Orimo! Ohio Arts Council Visiting Artist!

We are so happy to welcome accomplished international Artist, Migiwa Orimo to Passion Works Studio! Migiwa (pronounced Mee-gee-wah) comes to us through an Arts Learning Grant from the Ohio Arts Council and brings her electrifying energy and genuine care and talent to our studio. When asked about the experience so far, Migiwa says, “It’s very exciting to be here. Creating art with the Passion Works Artists inspires me! Through this collaboration I feel that I can grow as an artist.” Welcome, Migiwa! We’re going to do big things together!
